Additional Arctic observations improve weather and sea-ice forecasts for the Northern Sea Route

During ice-free periods, the Northern Sea Route (NSR) could be an attractive shipping route. The decline in Arctic sea-ice extent, however, could be associated with an increase in the frequency of the causes of severe weather phenomena, and high wind-driven waves and the advection of sea ice could make ship navigation along the NSR difficult. Accurate forecasts of weather and sea ice are desira...

Towards an Automatic Ice Navigation Support System in the Arctic Sea

Conventional ice navigation in the sea is manually operated by well-trained navigators, whose experiences are heavily relied upon to guarantee the ship’s safety. Despite the increasingly available ice data and information, little has been done to develop an automatic ice navigation support system to better guide ships in the sea. In this study, using the vector-formatted ice data and navigation...

Future navigability of Arctic sea routes: High-resolution projections of the Arctic Ocean and Sea Ice decline

1 The rapid Arctic summer sea ice reduction in the last decade has lead to debates in the 2 maritime industries whether one could expect an increase in cargo transportation in the region. 3 After a dramatic drop in Arctic maritime transport in the 1990s and 2000s, the number of 4 vessels sailing along the Northern Sea Route (NSR) increased from 4 in 2010 to 71 in 2013, 5 before declining to 53 ...

Glacial Ice Detection

Safe marine navigation in the Arctic is becoming more important with a growing interest in the region in recent years [1]. The United States Geological Survey (USGS) estimates there to be more than 90 billion barrels of undiscovered oil in the arctic [2]. With the summer Arctic sea ice extent having decreased by 50% since 1980 [3], this now opening waterway has given rise to serious interest in...

Underwater radiated noise levels of a research icebreaker in the central Arctic Ocean.

U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Healy's underwater radiated noise signature was characterized in the central Arctic Ocean during different types of ice-breaking operations. Propulsion modes included transit in variable ice cover, breaking heavy ice with backing-and-ramming maneuvers, and dynamic positioning with the bow thruster in operation. Compared to open-water transit, Healy's noise signature incr...
